5th Annual Butterfly Ball

February 24, 2024

The Alana Rose Foundation hosted the 5th Annual Butterfly Ball on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at the Madison Concourse Hotel and Governor's Club.

This year's theme was "Over the Rainbow".  We highlighted stories of pregnancy after loss, celebrated "rainbow babies", shined a light on the "dark side" of the rainbow, and learned more about the unique challenges faced by members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the 5th Annual Butterfly Ball a huge success! Over $22,000 was raised to help support the mission of the Alana Rose Foundation to raise awareness and provide hope, healing, and support to families who experience pregnancy and infant loss.

More than 100 people gathered on Saturday, February 29, 2020, to support the 1st Annual Butterfly Ball, the inaugural fundraising event for the Alana Rose Foundation.  Special thanks to the Madison Concourse Hotel and Governor’s Club for being such an amazing host and for their generous support of our event.

Thanks to Kirsten Engel Photography, as guests arrived, they were able to have professional photos taken on the purple carpet in front of the Butterfly Display, which was made by the talented Jamie and Bev Nelson.  High-resolution photos from the event are available for free download at https://kirstenengel.passgallery.com/-_projects_14532636/gallery

Champagne and Butterfly Martini’s were flowing during the cocktail hour, while guests enjoyed the beautiful music provided by Shekinah King.  Our Angel Butterfly Display honored more than 100 babies who left this world too soon.  We also sold Alana Awareness Bracelets and crane ornaments as part of the 1000 Cranes Fundraiser. After an amazing dinner, guests enjoyed delicious “Bundtini’s” that were generously donated by Nothing Bundt Cakes.

The formal program started with a welcome from Alana’s dad, Corey Whitmore.  Next, guests watched a special video of Alana’s big brother, Quentin, playing “Happy Birthday” on his viola.  Alana’s mom, Kim Whitmore, then shared Alana’s heartbreaking, yet inspiring, story and described the various activities that the Alana Rose Foundation has going on to help support their mission to raise awareness and provide hope, healing and support to families who experience pregnancy and infant loss.

Thanks to our incredible guest speakers who helped raise awareness about the local prevalence of pregnancy and infant loss and the racial disparities that exist, as well as resources that are available to help with prevention and support after loss, including: UnityPoint Health – Meriter’s Pregnancy and Infant Loss Program, Public Health Madison and Dane County, Harambee Village Doulas, Healing Our Hearts and the Hope After Loss Clinic.  Araceli Esparza also shared her beautiful and powerful poetry with us all. Thanks to A Way of Life Media who provided videography services throughout the evening, videos of the program are available on our website.

After the program, guests hit the dance floor thanks to DJ services that were generously provided by DJ Stacktrace.  We even had a special appearance by Portia Cox – Ms. Wisconsin United States 2019 who was working to advocate for pregnancy and infant loss during her campaign for Ms. Wisconsin World International.

This event would not have been possible without the generous support of our event sponsors, including: Harambee Village (Purple Emperor Butterfly Sponsor), Anonymous Sponsor (Purple Emperor Butterfly Sponsor), First United Methodist Church (Monarch Butterfly Sponsorship), Wisconsin Alliance for Women’s Health (Pink Butterfly Sponsor), Rory and Anne Nelson (Pink Butterfly Sponsor), and several individual Angel Butterfly Memorial Sponsors.  In total, we raised more than $5000 in sponsorships!

More than 60 individuals and businesses donated bottles of wine and silent auction items, which raised more than $2000 at the event. In total, $8000 in proceeds was donated to help support UnityPoint Health-Meriter’s Pregnancy and Infant Loss Program, which included the purchase of a new CuddleCot cooling system to help give grieving families the priceless gift of time.

A Resources table provided information about local resources for bereaved families and gave guests the opportunity to make donations to local partner organizations.  In total, more than $500 was raised and donated to help support Camp Hope, Faith’s Lodge, Healing Our Hearts, and Mikayla’s Grace.

Finally, thank you to everyone who helped support the planning efforts for the 1st Annual Butterfly Ball, especially our fabulous planning committee! We could not have made this happen without each of you!

“While we would have much rather thrown a 1st birthday party for our sweet Alana, since she can’t be here with us, there is no better way we could think of to celebrate her life and officially launch the Alana Rose Foundation.  Thank you to everyone who helped make this such an incredibly special event.” said Kim Whitmore, Founder and President of the Alana Rose Foundation.
